The Lecture –cum-workshop on POS-Morph for Urdu-Hindi & Maithili Report
LDC-IL, CIIL, Mysore,
19th -21st of September, 2011

     A three-day (19-21 Sept, 2011) Lecture cum Workshop on POS annotation and morphological analysis for Urdu-Hindi & Maithili was organized by LDC-IL at CIIL Mysore. Experts were invited from JNU, AMU, BHU, IIT Ropar and BITS Pilani to participate in this event.
Following were the objectives of this programme:
     1) To discuss and finalise the Maithili tag set based on the BIS scheme
     2) To discuss and finalise morpho-syntactic feature sets for Maithili Morphological Analyser
     3) To discuss Maithili POS issues based on pilot annotation
     4) To discuss Urdu-Hindi POS issues related to NNP (MWE), NST, PRP, JJ, Complex PSP, QTF, RPD (arising after adopting BIS scheme)
     5) To discuss Urdu specific POS issues related to izafat constructions and orthographic conventions
     6) To discuss Urdu specific issues related to non-concatenative morphology of nouns
     7) To discuss Hindi Morph analyser and related issues
     8) To validate random samples of POS annotated corpus in Urdu and Hindi
Programme details:
1st day:
      - The programme started with the LDC-IL presentation by Ms. Atreyee Shrama.
      - The lecture on “Issues in designing POS tag set for Indian languages” by Dr. Girish Nath Jha, JNU.
      - The lecture on “Complex Predicates in Urdu-Hindi” by Prof. K. S. Mustafa, AMU.
      - Post-lecture discussion on Urdu-Hindi complex predicates related to POS.
      - Discussion for finalizing Maithili tag set
      - Discussion on Maithili POS issues

2nd day:
      - The programme started with the lecture on “Handling multi-word expressions and multi-function words in Hindi-Urdu at POS level” by Dr. Anil Thakur, BHU.
      - The lecture on “Conjunctive Participle in Hindi-Urdu” by Prof. A. R. Fatihi, AMU.
      - Discussion on Urdu-Hindi POS issues 2

3rd day:
      - The programme started with the lecture on “Parts of Speech (POS) in Maithili” by Dr. Sanjeev Choudhary, BITS Pilani.
      - The lecture on “Maithili Inflectional Morphology” by Dr. Kamal Choudhary, IIT Ropar
      - Extensive discussion on Maithili Morphological Analyser and the related issues
      - Vote of thanks by Dr. L. Ramamoorthy, Head, LDC-IL

Achievements of the Programme:
      - Finalised the Maithili tag set
      - Finalised the morpho-syntactic feature sets for Maithili Morphological Analyser
      - Resolved Urdu-Hindi & Maithili POS issues
      - Resolved Urdu Morphological Analyser issues
      - Validated POS tagged samples of Urdu and Hindi
